踏まれてきたマンホール

マンホールのふた。
設置されたのは何年前なんだろう。
かつては、もっとアメリカ車の太いエンジンの音が響いていたんだろうね。
軽い音の車が増えてきた。
太くても軽くてもマンホール蓋には錆びる暇はないのだ。

Never a Day Off

I wonder how many years ago this manhole cover was installed.
In the past it reverberated with the sounds of America’s big,
powerful auto engines. Now, smaller, quieter engines are
becoming are common. But big and noisy or small and quiet,
this manhole cover never has time to get rusty.
