フロリダの湖
じりじりと真上から太陽が照りつける真夏のフロリダ北西部。
メキシコ湾に流れ込んでいるスワニー川近くの湖です。
もともと大昔珊瑚の海底で石灰岩が隆起し、雨水で浸食陥没して出来た池。
蓮がゆーらゆーらと風が吹くと揺れています。
その途端、水中からいきなり可愛い顔が出て呼吸。
この亀さんの祖先はいつからここなんだろう。
スワニー川は日本でも有名なフォスターが作曲した同名の川です。
鉄分を含み少し茶色で水中の可愛い手足が薄く見えています。
蓮の花芯がちょっと河童みたい。

Head’s up
It was mid-summer. Northwest Florida was bathed in burning sun.
The Suwannee River, which flows through Florida into the Gulf of Mexico,
is the one celebrated in Stephen Foster’s famous song.
This pond was formed when ancient lava uplifted from the seabed
was eroded by rain.
In it lotuses float, blown here and there by the breeze.
A small turtle pokies its head out of the water.
Iron gives the water a reddish cast, but the water is still clear enough
to see the outlines of its adorable feet.
I wonder how long this species has lived here.
